Wichita Family Photographer – Sara’s Pro Tips

Have you ever paid for a professional photo session and then never did anything with the pictures after sharing on social? Many mamas freeze and can’t make decisions about what to do with their photos, or simply never find time to order. You’re busy! I created this quick list of ideas to help you dream up ways to display those beautiful memories you made. Then when you shoot with me, I will make all your ideas happen for you!

1. Frame them or print on canvas – Imagine walking through your living room and seeing your favorite people in large frames on the wall, reminding you why you work so hard to provide and care for them.
2. Photo books – Take the best shots and make an heirloom photo book you can keep and pass down for generations. A great conversation piece for your coffee table.
3. Walnut photo display box – Perfect for a dresser or bookshelf, flip back through your photos whenever you need a smile. You could even frame a few and make a gallery wall, then change out the photos occasionally to keep it fresh!

Above you’ll see examples of my walnut display boxes and wall art. These high-quality boxes are STUNNING and so versatile. Frame some of the matted prints in sets of three, four, or even six, then switch them out from time to time! The large prints are so eye catching and they are total statement pieces in the home.

Below, you’ll see some examples of my heirloom albums (images from my lab, not mine) They have thick, lay-flat pages and the colors are bright and pop beautifully! These are meant to be cherished and passed down for generations.

Preparing for maternity photoshoot

When planning a pregnancy photoshoot there are a few things to consider! Pregnancy brain has most mamas in a fog in the second trimester, so I created a short list of things to prepare so you don’t overlook something. All expecting mamas literally GLOW during pregnancy (even if you don’t feel like you look amazing, you totally do!) and we want to cherish this moment before it’s gone.

1. Estimate bump timing – Every mama (and every baby) is so different! In general, short mamas can show much earlier than tall mamas. Consider number of pregnancies too, first-time mamas don’t usually show as early as with a 2nd or 3rd baby. Maternity photos usually get scheduled between 27-32 weeks!
2. Outfit ideas – Long flowy dresses photograph beautifully for maternity photos, they create great movement. Start with mom’s dress, then match dad/other kiddos to that. Neutrals for dad are great, he is basically an accessory for mom at this point! Some photographers (like me!) even have client closets with gorgeous bump flattering dresses included in their packages!
3. Not a dress fan? – Cozy sweaters with leggings or a long cardigan with boots are cute alternatives for a maternity photoshoot.
4. Outdoor vs. Studio – Consider whether you want a studio session or outdoor photos! Season could affect your decision; too hot or too cold outside could make you want a cozy indoor photoshoot. But temperature allowing, outdoors can make a great, natural setting for capturing your sweet baby bump.

No matter how you feel during pregnancy, trust me when I say you look AMAZING! I’ve had numerous mamas tell me they almost didn’t schedule a pregnancy photoshoot, and they are so glad they went through with it. Your body is doing something INCREDIBLE, and it’s so fun to document this exciting time anticipating baby’s arrival.

Newborn Photo Session Prep

Settling into newborn parent life (whether it’s your first or 5th time) is always an adjustment! It’s totally normal for your brain to feel completely scrambled those first couple of weeks. I wanted to put together a list of what to expect and what you need to be prepared for when you schedule a newborn photo session, so you don’t forget anything!

Planning ahead

WHAT TO EXPECT

The studio will be HOT – Please dress accordingly, as the studio will be very warm in hopes of keeping the tiny baby sleepy!

Plan on feeding baby when you arrive – Even if baby just needs topped off, we will try feeding first thing! Whatever we can do to get a super sleepy baby.

Seating and Snacks– I have two rooms in my studio, and there is seating in each room so baby can always be in your sight. I will also have snacks and drinks because we know you’ll run out the door without breakfast!

Newborn sessions can last 2-4 hours – Depending on baby’s sleepiness and cooperation, our session could take a while, so plan on hanging out! I have plenty of patience for your little one, and we will let baby lead the session. If dad or siblings need to step away after their part of photos is done they are welcome to; my building has a corridor on the first floor with some tables and chairs, or they can take a stroll down Main Street and come back when we’re done!

I have everything we need – All you need to bring is baby! I have wraps, headbands, hats, outfits; no need to bring anything for the photos. I also have everything you could have forgotten at home, diapers, wipes, bottle warmer, boppy, burp rags and more.

Special Items – I am happy to work special items into our photo session, I just ask for a heads up so I can brainstorm ideas on how to incorporate them!
